UNESCO Drömling Biosphere Reserve - a visit to the land of 1,000 ditches and wet forests
The Drömling lies between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, on both sides of the former inner-German border. The construction of a network of ditches and canals in the water catchment areas of the Weser and Elbe rivers over the last 250 years has transformed the area into a cultural landscape. UNESCO recognized the Drömling as the 17th UNESCO biosphere reserve in Germany in 2023.

The Drömling is a fascinating lowland landscape - in all seasons. The laws of the lowland landscape are particularly evident in winter and spring, when floods transform the meadows into reflective surfaces. This is the time for waterfowl and wading birds, thousands of which rest here. Once the water has receded, colorful carpets of flowers quickly cover the fens. Rare meadow birds have begun their breeding season. The white stork stalks around. Black storks and cranes have returned to the swampy forests. Red kites, black kites and white-tailed eagles nest in the treetops.

For visitors, the signposted "Niedersächsicher Drömling" cycling and hiking trail is ideal. It leads through the different landscapes of the Lower Saxony Drömling and also offers connections to further cycle paths in the Saxony-Anhalt Drömling.

The historical features of the region can still be felt today. For a long time, the character of the Drömling was shaped by the inner-German border that divided it. The biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO on both sides of the former border is therefore also a recognition of the many years of cooperation in the region and a symbol of its continuation.

Network of Drömlings partners
The Drömlings partners stand for sustainable tourism development in the region. The partner businesses are awarded according to uniform national quality and environmental standards and combine a commitment to the environment and nature. At the heart of the biosphere reserve's partner initiative is a shared understanding of the need to strengthen the region. A further aim is close collaboration and cooperation between the stakeholders. In the interests of sustainable regional development, the partnerships increase acceptance of the biosphere reserve among the public and political decision-makers. Whether organic farming, sustainable trade or culinary delights - the program promotes exchange via the partner network.
