The Historic Town Hall in Duderstadt

Once built as a Kophus (department store), it also served as an administrative and court building for later generations. The three-towered oak timber-framed construction rests on a massive foundation of light sandstone. The core of the building was already constructed around 1302, the south wing in 1432, the arbour and the half-timbered building around 1530, the Renaissance staircase in 1673/74. Despite this long building history, the Rathaus gives the impression of rare unity and harmony.
Deep within its walls, the town hall still houses the old council wine cellar, the torture chamber and other interesting exhibition areas. Since the final renovation work was carried out in 2011 and 2012, visitors have been able to explore this magnificent building over nine levels, from the vault deep down in the cellar to the tower.
Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a unique view over the old town of Duderstadt with its small streets and alleys and its brick-red roofs.
