Lake Steinhude

Niedersachsen’s biggest lake

A sea eagle soars high above the water, while butterflies and dragonflies flutter and waft around you. In and on the water, swimmers, surfers and sailing boats complete the picture.

Lake Steinhude Nature Park manages the balancing act of providing a lively recreation site for people and a safe retreat for flora and fauna. Covering around 420 square kilometres, about a fifth of the park is a strictly protected nature reserve, while half is classified as a protected landscape area.

The ‘Metropolis by the Sea’

Steinhude

The largest settlement on the ‘sea’ is Steinhude. Once a fishing and weaving village, it’s now known for its local smoked eel – a must-try – and its charming half-timbered town centre. The historical Barn District is well worth a visit, while the toy and weaving museums likewise invite discovery. Fancy watching tropical insects flutter freely? The Butterfly Farm will be right up your road.

Niedersachsen’s largest inland lake

The heart of the nature park

At roughly 29 square kilometres, Lake Steinhude is the largest inland lake in Niedersachsen. It is also, after Lake Dümmer, one of the shallowest: its deepest point is barely three metres. The southern and eastern shores are home to peat bogs, once used for turf cutting, while to the west lie the damp grasslands of the Meerbruch meadows – both remnants of the original, much larger lake. Today the wetlands around the lake, which are mostly protected, are a valuable habitat for countless birds, amphibians and aquatic insects.

A journey back in time

A trip aboard the emigrant boat

Gliding across Lake Steinhude in a historical emigrant boat is both a memorable experience and a chance to slow down. These traditional sailing vessels offer a unique way to enjoy the natural surroundings and take in panoramic views of Niedersachsen’s largest inland lake.

They’re perfect for anyone wishing to discover Lake Steinhude in a truly special and authentic way. The open-decked boats run on motor power – and sometimes, with a bit of luck, under sail – to Wilhelmstein Island. Built from 1761 by Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe, this is Germany’s smallest inhabited island and holds many a secret.
