The artists’ village of Worpswede

A favourite with artists

Worpswede, the famous artists’ village in the Teufelsmoor, is a place where art and nature merge in perfect harmony.

Just look at those clouds! The clouds and sky above Worpswede are like nowhere else. On some days the clouds look like vast mountains of cotton wool, through which the gentlest light percolates. It was this sky over Worpswede that drew artists and poets to the village. Painter Paula Modersohn-Becker simply called it a ‘wonderland’.

Germany’s most famous artists’ village offers an unrivalled idyll in a spectacular landscape. The Teufelsmoor (Devil’s Moor), with its mystical pools, distinctive vegetation and endless horizons, continues to inspire creatives to this day. Worpswede even has its own sand dune right in the village. And then there’s the village itself, adorned with cobbled streets and old farmhouses. Charm incarnate!

From Paula Modersohn-Becker to Rainer Maria Rilke

Art at every turn

People come to Worpswede above all for the art: the village boasts no fewer than six museums and countless galleries. Heinrich Vogeler and Paula Modersohn-Becker are among the most celebrated artists to have lived in this community of 9,000. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke also found inspiration here for his verses. Fritz Overbeck, Otto Modersohn – the list of renowned artists goes on and on. Many of the houses tell stories of that era, with just a touch of Art Nouveau in the air. To this day, Worpswede is a place that hums with creativity. Visitors can step inside studios, take part in courses run by artists and craftspeople, and watch resident fellows painting and sketching in the historical buildings.

Moorland, art and tranquillity

Romance in the moorland and in Fischerhude

Inspiration here comes not only from the charming village itself but also from its surroundings. The Teufelsmoor is perfect for exploring on foot or by taking the Moor Express heritage railway. Hitch a ride on one of the traditional barges that glide along its canals or hop on a bike and head for Fischerhude. This is a village idyll at its finest, where ancient oaks, small ponds and half-timbered farmhouses radiate a warm welcome. Numerous arts and crafts studios, from potteries to cosy cafés, create enchanting moments that feel far removed from everyday life. Returning to Worpswede, you might visit the Weyerberg, a wooded sand dune. The old trees there have such a magical presence that you may well feel the urge to start painting yourself.
