Die Salzwiese als Nahrungs- und Rastraum für Wasser- und Watvögel
The Elisabethaußengroden is a vast salt marsh that stretches out in front of the dike on the northern coast of Wangerland. The salt marsh is a very special habitat. Located in the foreshore (Außengroden), it is influenced by seawater, which completely floods the salt marsh during winter storm surges. For land plants that absorb water from the soil through their root systems, excessive salinity poses a major problem that limits their presence in this habitat. Only a relatively small number of species can survive here: glasswort, saltmarsh grass, sea aster, and sea lavender are among the best known. They have all developed very special strategies that enable them to cope with the stress factor of “salt.”
The guided tour introduces the unique flora and fauna of the salt marsh, a habitat highly worthy of protection. It will also address other coastal-specific topics, such as dike construction and changes to the coastline throughout history. Migratory birds, for whom the salt marsh is an important feeding and resting area, will also be highlighted.
A joint event organized by the Wangerland National Park Center and the Scientific Working Group for Nature and Environmental Conservation (WAU)
