Osnabrück

The City of Peace in the UNESCO Geopark TERRA.vita

Osnabrück stands out – especially for its many facets still waiting to be discovered. Located in Niedersachsen, the city is renowned as the place where the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648, earning it the title ‘City of Peace’. This historical event continues to shape the cultural life of Osnabrück, with its Town Hall recognised as a European Cultural Heritage Site. In addition to its significant history, Osnabrück is a hub for art. Both national and international artists use the city as a platform to showcase their works. And here’s a surprising fact: Osnabrück is the only major German city situated at the heart the UNESCO TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark. This makes this former Hanseatic city an ideal destination for walking and cycling enthusiasts, as many of the park’s routes lead right into the city itself.

Everything stays; it’s all art! That’s the motto at the art gallery, where exhibitions captivate visitors all year round. But there’s plenty for non-art lovers too. St Peter’s Cathedral and the Diocesan Museum tell the story of the Diocese of Osnabrück’s founding, while the historical Town Hall offers a deep dive into the history of the Peace of Westphalia. You should also definitely take a look at the castle, which is now part of the university.
