Tour description

The start and end point of this tour is at the Lucklum manor. This tour is a circular route, so you can alternatively start and end the tour at any other point along the described route.

The centuries-old estate complex with manor house, manor church, farm and residential buildings as well as a unique landscape park offers the ideal conditions to start the tour through the "Beautiful Villages in the District of Wolfenbüttel" here.

From the Lucklum manor, the tour heads north to Veltheim. Once there, a short detour to the historic moated castle and the church of St. Remigius is a must. The moated castle, which dates back to the 12th century, is still owned by the von Veltheim family today.

You then cross the surrounding fields in the direction of Hemkenrode. There you can enjoy a wonderful view towards Braunschweig on the way to Destedt.

In Destedt itself, the next stop on the tour is the Renaissance Destedt Castle with its beautiful castle park. The castle complex, which dates back to the Middle Ages and was once a moated castle, is also the family seat of the von Veltheims. An English landscape park with unique trees and a palm house surrounds the castle and is freely accessible to visitors without a bicycle.

You then leave Destedt in a north-easterly direction before reaching Abbenrode shortly afterwards. Here you should pay a brief visit to the Abbenrode trestle windmill (stamp point 37), which can be seen from afar.

The mill, built by miller August Kräker in 1864, is surrounded by a small exhibition of historical farming equipment and an inviting mill café.

The route now takes you via Gardessen to Schandelah. In the center of the village is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. George with its Gothic west tower. From here, the route continues to the Schandelah Jura Sea to the north of the village (stamp point 38).

The Schandelaher Wohld nature reserve, an area formerly used for military purposes, is virtually bypassed and the route leads away from the roads from the Schandelaher Wohld information point to Hordorf.

It goes through near-natural areas into the Wedeler Teiche nature reserve and on into the Buchhorst forest area.

At the eastern edge of the forest you reach the "Schöppenstedter Turm", formerly a defense tower of the city of Braunschweig, today a small industrial area. From here, the tour takes you via Hötzum to Apelnstedt, whose Friedenskirche church is located directly on the route.

The final stage of the tour runs from Apelnstedt along the Wiesengraben to Volzum and then via Neuerkerode back to the starting point of the tour, the Lucklum manor.
