Always follow the hare: This will take you from the capital of the Emsland region to the oldest town in the region - and back again. Along the way, you will repeatedly encounter the wide, natural course of the river and enjoy the charming cultural landscapes along its banks. And discover impressive cultural treasures. In the village of Bückelte, for example, there is a late Gothic chapel whose exterior may be inconspicuous - but its choir is decorated with around 500-year-old frescoes, which were discovered by chance during a renovation in 1963 and then carefully uncovered.

Medieval architecture can also be seen in Haselünne: Burgmannshöfe, the representative residences of the nobility, which together with proud town houses and the historic town hall characterize the image of the old town. Not to be forgotten: The tradition of grain distilling is very much alive in Haselünne. A museum shows the history of this high-proof pleasure, and local companies offer exciting factory tours and tastings. Last but not least, the St. Vincentius church with its beautiful Gothic vaults and valuable furnishings is well worth a visit.

The church you discover on the way back is almost twice as old: In Bokeloh, St. Vitus was built directly on the banks of the River Hase more than 1,000 years ago. Right next door, the old school brings learning to life as it was 100 years ago. An exhibition also commemorates the work of artist Otto Pankok in Bokeloh.

Back in Meppen, you can visit other magnificent churches, such as the proud provost church of St. Vitus. Or relax at the Koppelschleuse and treat your tired legs to a short Kneipp treatment: this prevents tension and sore muscles.
