The Jan-Schüpp bicycle path can be started or ended at any desired location. Those setting off from Carolinensiel begin in one of the most beautiful sluice villages on the East Frisian North Sea coast. Worth seeing here are the German Sielhafen Museum and the Museum Harbor. From Carolinensiel, continue along Mühlenstraße towards Neufunnixsiel. Along this section, you ride partly along the Harle. The bike route then leads via Altfunnixsiel to Funnix. Here, a detour (approx. 2.8 km round trip) is worthwhile to visit the "Sculpture Garden". The artist Leonard Wübbena has impressively combined art and garden landscape here. For church lovers, it is worth visiting the St. Mary's Church in the quaint village of Buttforde. This church dates back to the first half of the 13th century and was built from hewn granite blocks. The route then continues towards Blersum. It is not far to the district town of Wittmund. On the way to the city center, the route passes the Peldemühle. Built in 1741, it is the oldest functioning gallery-style Dutch mill in Germany. The town center of the Harle city is affectionately called "Pudding." Here you will finally meet Jan-Schüpp. The fountain figure, located on Brückstraße, symbolizes the East Frisian way of life—not taking everything too seriously and sometimes taking yourself lightly. Besides the handprints of famous personalities, the "Hands of Fame," the Robert von Zeppelin and Aviation Museum, which offers a lot for flight fans and technology enthusiasts, is another highlight in the pedestrian zone. The return trip to Carolinensiel begins on Mühlenstraße towards Eggelingen and leads past wind farms. Beyond the village of Toquard, the route heads towards Berdum, where you approach the Berdum mill directly. In the last section between Berdum and Carolinensiel, close by is the "Golden Line" with the boundary stone of 1868. Since the 16th century, the Harle Bay has been gradually diked. To avoid disputes over the ownership and drainage of the newly gained land, on December 22, 1666, Princess Christine Charlotte of East Frisia and Count Anton Günther of Oldenburg concluded a border treaty regarding the East Frisian and Jever dikes. On the stake dike, a line was drawn on the sea chart to a point exactly between the islands of Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. Because this border was drawn on the map with golden ink, it still bears the name "Golden Line" on maps and street signs today.
