Along small and large rivers, through idyllic half-timbered towns and vibrant natural and cultural landscapes it goes on the city-country-river route in the heart of Wendland!

On the city-country-river route you visit Dannenberg, Hitzacker and Dömitz, charming half-timbered towns on the Elbe, each with its own exciting history. You should also plan enough time for strolling and lingering. The family-friendly route has almost no inclines and offers variety on the way through its constantly changing landscape. In the Elbe foreland near Kaltenhof, the ruins of the Dömitz railway bridge have reminded of the German past for over 50 years. Today it is a UNESCO-protected national cultural monument and a popular motif for many photographers. The fortress in Dömitz is also worth a stop! Idyllic villages with a manageable yet bustling rural life, as well as the unique river landscape of the Elbe complete the picture. On this bike route through city-country-river, nature and culture present themselves on all paths and banks, which you can also admire from the water on two crossings of the Elbe.

Directions

The city-country-river route starts at the tourist information center in Hitzacker. Going upstream along the Elbe, you turn right into the village of Nienwedel. Then it continues along the Jeetzel through Pisselberg to Dannenberg. Here the path takes you into the town center with its idyllic half-timbered backdrop, before heading through the Dannenberg marshes via Breese and Gamse to the next body of water, the Gümser Lake. From there you cycle over Siepnitz, Quickborn to Gusborn and Kacherien back to the Elbe. To your right you will see the ruins of the Dömitz railway bridge. A short stop is worthwhile! A little further on you cross the Elbe and make another stop in Dömitz at the fortress. Back on the path you follow the Löcknitz for a while to Rüterberg on the Elbe. Going downstream now continues through the Elbe floodplains, past villages like Wehringen, Raffatz and Strachau to Herrenhof. By ferry you cross again and reach your starting point Hitzacker.
