Osnabrück Palace Garden

Castle park
The experienced French garden architect M. Charbonnier planned and built the palace garden.

Here, principles of the large garden he later created in Hanover-Herrenhausen were anticipated. The extension of the palace garden and its alterations from 1771 onwards in the style of the English landscape garden became the model for the redesign of private gardens of the Osnabrück bourgeoisie.
The garden, which like the palace was completely destroyed in the Second World War, was given a new look in the mid-1960s according to plans by Professor Lendholt.
The strict Baroque style is found again near the terrace in the form of new square plant beds with six flanking ground-level fountains as well as two rows of lime trees cut into a box shape. The southern palace garden area had more the style of an English landscape garden.
The approximately 3.5 hectare palace garden area is now a popular destination and, surrounded by university facilities, reflects the vibrant life of a modern metropolis.
