Nemitzer Heide

Nature reserve/Naturschutzgebiet

When the sun rises over the heather in late summer, a flurry of activity begins. Thousands of bees begin to collect nectar from the shimmering purple flowers.

A devastating forest fire in 1975 destroyed extensive pine forests. The very dry and nutrient-poor sandy soils subsequently developed into a magnificent heath landscape. The dwarf shrub heathland with its gentle dunes and large areas of rough grassland extends over more than 550 hectares. The upper floor of the "Nemitzer Heidehaus" is home to an elaborately designed, completely barrier-free exhibition.

Many protected plants and animals have found their habitat here and you can observe rare bird species such as the tawny pipit, stonechat and nightjar on a walk through the heathland. Things are also lively on the ground. Heather sheep and goats graze tirelessly in the landscape, ensuring its preservation.
