Kloster Esterwegen

Monastery
The comparatively young Franciscan monastery of Esterwegen was founded in 2007 at the instigation of the Diocese of Osnabrück and serves as a small spiritual center. With a direct spatial reference to the former Esterwegen concentration camp, this place offers an opportunity to reflect on the inhuman horrors of National Socialism in a monastic environment. Several memorial rooms allow for spiritual contemplation and inner confrontation with the themes of guilt, reconciliation, forgiveness and one's own responsibility in the here and now. The dedicated sisters of the Franciscan order see their work as part of the long tradition of Franciscan care. Even if the days of outpatient medical care for the rural population of Hümmlingen have now passed, the sisters still care about every person who comes to them for advice.
