The former Benedictine convent was founded in 1194 on a Tecklenburg estate and existed until secularization in 1803. The Benedictine nuns, who had taken a vow of chastity, poverty and obedience, lived according to the principle of "ora et labora" ("pray and work"). The day and night were characterized by frequent times of prayer and work with spinning and weaving. This included lay sisters, day laborers, craftsmen, carters . . .
