A renaturalized open-cast lignite mining area
The image of the landscape was shaped in particular by the mining of lignite until 1966. The area was subsequently recultivated, and today the 4 lakes, the near-natural course of the Saale river and the extensive wooded areas form a popular local recreation area.
Gypsum, quartz sand, clay and limestone are still mined and used in peripheral areas today.
A geological nature trail touches on all the important geological units and provides information on display boards about their formation, structure and use.
The Waldhotel Humboldt is a suitable starting point.

Aus Richtung Hannover:
Aus Norden kommend verlassen Sie die A7 an der Abfahrt 59 (B443/Laatzen) und fädeln Sie sich in Richtung Pattensen/Sarstedt ein. Dann fahren Sie weiter auf der B3 bis zur Ausfahrt Eime, anschließend weiter Richtung Marienhagen über Weenzen.
Aus Richtung Göttingen:
Aus Süden kommend verlassen Sie die A7 an der Ausfahrt 69 (Northeim-Nord) auf die B 3 in Richtung Hameln/Einbeck/Alfeld (L.). Dann fahren Sie weiter auf der B3 bis zur Ausfahrt Delligsen, anschließend weiter Richtung Coppengrave nach Duingen.
Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel
Anreise mit der Bahn bis Alfeld (Leine).
Alfeld (Leine) liegt verkehrsgünstig an der Nord-Süd-Hauptstrecke der Bahn. Die Züge der Deutschen Bahn AG und der Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH ermöglichen eine stündliche An- und Abreise nach und von Alfeld (Leine).
Ab Alfeld (Leine)/Bahnhof ZOB nehmen Sie die Linie 64 bis Duingen.
