Hanover is known for its huge city forest. The Eilenriede stretches through the eastern part of the city and is one of the largest and oldest contiguous urban forests in Europe, covering an area of 640 hectares. The Eilenriede is divided into a northern part not far from the zoo and the district of the same name and a southern part, which mainly belongs to the Kleefeld district. The area, which is almost twice the size of Central Park, establishes Hanover as a green city.
After the commercial forest developed into a local recreation area in the 19th century, the Eilenriede has been owned by the city for more than 600 years and, in addition to the rich animal and plant population, attracts visitors with numerous sports and leisure activities. The large network of paths in the Eilenriede enables relaxed walks through the greenery - hundreds of benches, ponds, sunbathing areas and dog meadows, forest restaurants and adventure playgrounds not only attract Hanoverians, but are also a popular attraction for tourists. The fitness trail with 15 fitness stations and the well-developed paths, which are regularly used for inline skating, cycling and jogging, provide a sporting balance.
