Mudflat hike to the shipwreck—spooky-looking remains teeming with life

What’s the story behind the mysterious shipwreck in the mudflats off Schillig? Even from the beach, you can see the outline of the old ship, weathered by the tides. What was once discarded is now home to a surprisingly diverse array of wildlife. Together with a certified national park guide, we’ll embark on an exciting search for clues and discover who lives here in hiding. With plenty of curiosity, we’ll explore the mudflats around the wreck, uncover traces, and observe how everything in the Wadden Sea is interconnected.

Meeting point for this mudflat hike: on Schillig Beach: “Weltentor” – two tall wooden beams – a crossbeam with the words “Weltentor” burned into it – standing on the dike – with the Hotel Upstalsboom behind you – look toward the water, and about 60 meters away you’ll see the wooden beams of the “Weltentor.” The “Wattenmeer” town sign is also located right next to the “Weltentor.”
