Einblick in die Erdgeschichte

Permanent exhibition
Creatures turned to stone give visitors an insight into the prehistoric worlds from the end of the Palaeozoic era to the modern era. The showpiece of the collection is a fish dinosaur almost five meters in size. These marine reptiles populated the world's oceans in the Mesozoic era. The ichthyosaur found in Salzgitter in 1940 is the only specimen of a Platypterygius hercynicus to date.

Not only this unique find, but also the mineral resources salt and iron ore, which are so important for the development of Salzgitter, are a legacy of the seas. Iron ore was deposited twice, each time 30 million years apart. The formation of these iron ores and the salt rocks precipitated in the Zechstein period are presented in detail in the exhibition.

Geology can be experienced live on a hike through the Lichtenberge and the Salzgitter mountain range. The geopaths lead to the layers of rock in which the fossilized evidence can still be found millions of years later.

Since 2007, the Salder Castle Municipal Museum has also been an information center in the Harz.Braunschweiger Land.Ostfalen Geopark network.
