50.000 Jahre Leben in Salzgitter

Permanent exhibition
The first "Salzgitterans" already lived here in the Ice Age: They set up camp on the Krähenriede 50,000 years ago. From here they went hunting for reindeer. They targeted the animals in order to obtain the nutritious bone marrow and hides. Collected mammoth bones were processed into bone tools and tools were made from flint.

The permanent exhibition in the castle focuses on the life of the Neanderthals in the Ice Age climate.

The Ice Age Garden also picks up on this and gives an impression of the living conditions of the Neanderthals, the climate and the ecology of that time. On an area of around 2,000 square meters, visitors will find a natural landscape that has been created on the basis of the excavation results.

The visitor learns how the landscape and living environment were shaped and influenced during the Ice Age and how people adapted to their specific environment. Themes such as weather, climate, climate change and the way of life of Neanderthals are presented here. In addition to simple shelters and workplaces for fur and flint working and food preparation, the focus is on the mammoth trap with a mammoth track and a life-size woolly rhinoceros. The Ice Age Garden is part of the Geopark and is a special addition to the geologically diverse Braunschweig region.
