Harzer-Hexen-Stieg

Natural wonders and ancient legends

Witches, forests and grand summits – the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg has it all

This is a path that weaves together history, nature and magic in a truly unique way. Stretching 97 km, the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg is without doubt one of Germany’s most impressive long-distance hiking routes. From the peaceful town of Osterode to the mystical Thale, the path leads through a rich and varied landscape. With its climbs, winding forest paths and silent upland moors, it provides the perfect backdrop for tales of plucky witches and ancient myths. Certified with the Hikeable Germany quality certification (Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland), it takes you deep into a world where reality and fairy tale blur. But it’s not just a magical experience – it’s also a physical challenge. The route can be divided into five stages and, with its distance and elevation changes, is considered a demanding walk.

Witchcraft and splendour

Magic mountains

From the starting point in Osterode, the trail leads via Buntenbock to Torfhaus, passing the ponds and waterways of the Upper Harz Water Management System – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once powered the mining industry in the region. As you enter the Harz Mountains National Park, the landscape begins to change. The dense forests become more untouched, providing a habitat for red deer and even lynx, which have been successfully reintroduced to the area in recent years.

By the time you reach Torfhaus, a key question arises: take the bypass around the Brocken or take the bull by the horns? The trail climbs the legendary Brocken, which at 1,141 metres is the highest peak in northern Germany. Providing the witches aren’t cavorting here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view that makes every step worthwhile. Descending via Drei Annen Hohne, you leave the Harz Mountains National Park behind. Further along the route, the village of Rübeland – with its famous dripstone caves – is an unmissable highlight. Between Treseburg and Thale, the trail winds through the Bode Valley, flanked on both sides by dramatic granite cliffs.

A new wilderness is emerging

The landscape in transition

The Harzer-Hexen-Stieg is dotted with sights, places to stay, and shelters for a break or overnight stay. You can stamp your Harz Mountains walking pass at numerous stamp stations along the way, making progress towards the coveted Harz Walking Badge (Harzer Wandernadel) or even the title of Walking King or Walking Emperor.

And if you look closely, you’ll see the Harz is rewriting its own story. All along the trail, dead trees are giving way to fresh growth, creating a new and truly unique wilderness. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and bear witness to this important rebirth.
