On this stage, we enter the "Grand Canyon" of the Harz Mountains - the Bode Valley between Treseburg and Thale. Here, granite walls up to 250 meters high tower to the left and right of the path. In Thale, a detour to the Rostrappe or Hexentanzplatz is worthwhile.

The trout from the River Bode are well-known, popular and delicious. Freshly caught, they are brought to the table in Altenbrak and Treseburg. The gently rippling Bode is their home.
In Treseburg, we enter the Bode Valley nature reserve, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. Before 1865, it was not possible to pass through the section ahead of us. The rock was too close to the water, there was no room for a passage and the technical possibilities were not yet sufficient to create one.
First, however, we take a comfortable path into the gorge, which is still wide enough up here. The water gurgles softly in the depths, no civilization noise disturbs the idyll. Soon, however, the path narrows, the water gets closer and the rocks reach higher and higher to the left and right. Finally, the river roars through its stony bed, spray mist permeates the air and granite walls up to 250 meters high rise up.
At the top, Rosstrappe and Hexentanzplatz can be seen with a good eye, once mystical places of worship, today popular excursion destinations. The route continues along the Bode and later through the Friedenspark towards the final destination of the Harz Witches' Trail.

Directions

Der Harzer-Hexen-Stieg verläuft auf dieser Etappe immer entlang der Bode, die von Altenbrak bis kurz hinter Treseburg breit und sachte dahin fließt. Nach Treseburg betreten wir den Gand Canyon des Harzes, hier wird der Weg enger und steiler, die Bode wird zum rauschenden Wildbach, bis sie sich kurz vor Thale wieder beruhigt und auch den Harzer-Hexen-Stieg entlässt. Zum Start und Ziel am Bahnhof ist es nun nicht mehr weit, und hoffentlich reicht die Zeit noch für eine Einkehr in die Stadt im „Sagenharz“.

Directions & Parking facilities

Altenbrak: In Blankenburg von A36 auf B81 wechseln; kurz vor Wendefurth auf die L94 abbiegen.

Thale: A36 Richtung Thale/Friedrichsbrunn/Westerhausen, L240 und L92

Sowohl am Etappenbeginn und -ende gibt es kostenpflichtige Parkplätze.

Altenbrak ist per Bus 257 (www.hvb-harz.de) von Blankenburg oder Thale erreichbar.

Der Harzer-Hexen-Stieg endet unmittelbar gegenüber dem Bahnhof der Deutschen Bahn.
