Across the sun-drenched high plateau of the Lower Harz, we reach Hasselfelde. The Kohlerweg starts in the town’s spa park. As mining shaped the Upper Harz, charcoal burning has left its marks in many places in this area. To prevent us from passing these relics thoughtlessly, information boards point out these traces in the landscape. The tradition of charcoal making is still lovingly maintained to this day. At the demonstration charcoal kiln at Stemberghaus, the piles are smoking, and the spicy scent can be detected in the forest from afar. Those with space take home a sack of genuine Harz charcoal.
From Königshütte, we head towards Hasselfelde, against the current of the Warme Bode. We walk along the paths once used by emperors and kings and finally come across the lying Rappbode pre-dam. The remains of the transport castle are barely visible now – however, the shore offers an idyllic picnic spot on moss cushions. The castle once protected a ford across the Rappbode. This trade route has been in use for over 1000 years. The route continues via Hasselfelde along the Kohlerpfad, past Stemberghaus to Altenbrak.
