Oldenburg

Cycling in a city built around the university – and kale

In Oldenburg, you’ll experience a delightful mix of leisure and culture, all easily accessible. You don’t even need Oldenburg’s most popular mode of transport – the bicycle – to explore its cultural highlights, since everything is within walking distance. Wandering through the city centre, you’ll uncover much local history along the way. Stroll to the castle, St Lambert’s Church, the Town Hall, or visit the city’s landmark, the Lappan historical bell tower. As a university town, Oldenburg boasts a vibrant cultural scene, charming cafés and many independent shops lining its narrow streets. During your visit, you’ll discover plenty of picturesque spots to pause and take it all in. Alternatively, watch the world go by at the city’s harbour and soak up the atmosphere. And if you’re visiting during kale season, you’re in for a treat – it’s no wonder Oldenburg is the kale capital of Germany.

Sights

Short distances don’t mean there’s little to see in Oldenburg – quite the opposite. Take time to visit the Oldenburg State Theatre, where four venues host plays, ballets, operas and concerts. The State Museum in the castle takes you on a journey through art and culture. Marvel at the diverse plant life in the adjoining castle gardens, or step inside St Lambert’s Church, the city’s tallest building. One particular recommendation is the Computer Museum, where you can trace the fascinating developments of technology over the years.
