On lonely and fast paths through the district of Rotenburg (Wümme)

The 109 km long road bike tour offers relaxed and fast road biking in a rural idyll between the towns of Visselhövede and Rotenburg (Wümme) and the hurricane town of Scheeßel. Typical of this region are the easy-to-navigate agricultural roads through wide fields, green forests and scattered moorland. A particular highlight of the route is the 5 km long "Fidi-Boon-Wech". This disused, perfectly asphalted railroad line is not only great for cycling, it is also ideal for relaxing.

Detailed route:
The 109 km long circular tour starts at Scheeßel station, which is on the Hamburg-Bremen railroad line and therefore offers excellent access by public transport.

We first cycle along a secluded farm track parallel to the railroad line to Lauenbrück and on via Benkeloh to Fintel, where you will find the St. Antonius Cycle Route Church as well as places to stop for refreshments and shopping. Passing the Eurostrand vacation resort, the route continues along secluded stretches to Rieper Moor. There are now seven 90 degree turns on the shortest stretch, where the road surface has a few imperfections. Shortly after Deepen, we take the L131 on the edge of the Hemslinger Moor for around 3 km, which leads us directly to Hemslingen and Söhlingen.

The next section takes us along district roads with little traffic via Rosebruch, Hütthof and Buchholz to Visselhövede to the photogenic town hall and the St. Johanniskirche church located by the Visselquelle spring. In the middle of the tranquil little town, there is a cycle service store and several places to stop for refreshments and shopping, inviting you to take a break.

Well fortified, the route continues via Nindorf to Jeddingen, the southernmost part of the route. In Dreeßel, we cycle for a short section on a district road through the neighboring district of Verden, where we turn off to Kirchwalsede in Groß Sehlingen. The late Romanesque church of St. Bartholomew was once built here by medieval master builders. The cycle path church forms the center of the tranquil village.

We reach Westerwalsede on farm tracks. Now we cycle a short distance through an impressive avenue of trees. Via Unterstedt we reach the green outskirts of Rotenburg, criss-crossed by streams. If you wish, you can take a detour into the center of the district town. The circular route continues to Bothel, via the cycle path on the B440 towards Visselhövede, on more secluded paths and by crossing the small Rodau stream, lined by a charming landscape of fields and meadows.

Here we change to the "Fidi-Boon-Wech", a fast cycle path that was built on a former railroad line in 2024. Shady paths then lead us through the rural villages of Wohlsdorf and Bartelsdorf. From here, the route is accompanied by dense treetops to the historic Veerse manor, which was built in the 16th century and is idyllically situated in a park with mature trees. Unfortunately, the path format here has some shortcomings.

The last section of the southern loop leads back to the picturesque town center of Scheeßel. There are several places to stop for refreshments here, so you can start your journey home from the train station well fortified.
