Since the Ice Age before last, the Wümme has formed a unique river landscape in northern Germany: the Wümmeniederung with its meadows, floodplains and wooded dunes. The NORDPFAD sometimes runs more or less close to the river and always offers magnificent views of the wide meadows of the Wümme lowlands.

NORDROUTE from Rotenburg railroad station via Fährhof to the Voßberge nature reserve
From Rotenburg railroad station with its free parking spaces, where the information board at the cab rank is also located, a 1.6 km long access path leads to the playground in the Ahe. This is where our circular route starts.
We leave the asphalt road and turn right onto the forest path, which leads us through the beautiful Ahe town forest until we reach the forest path again. We walk past the Kattensteertsee lake, a popular private fishing spot. After a while, the view opens up between mighty trees and quiet clearings to expansive, green Wümme meadows, through which the downstream flowing Wümme, 300 m away, makes its way.
After the railroad bridge, we turn left and reach the work of art "Lauf der Welt" by the artists Sabine and Christian Geddert from Vahlde. This shows a globe that is in contact with three oak planks, which are intended to symbolize the themes of "becoming, passing away and new emergence". The trail continues along sunny and shady forest paths. In some places, the river Wümme comes within 100 m of the NORDPFAD. In the rustic forest classroom, which was set up by the Waffensen rural youth group as part of the "72-hour campaign", we treat ourselves to a rest and let our gaze wander through the "viewing window" to the lush meadows.
We continue to the work of art "Going into the air" by artist Bernd Hanewinkels The silver figure on the high pedestal strides bravely into the void. It stands for courage and reaching for the stars. Right next to it is a comfortable wooden lounger built by young people from Rotenburg as part of a project. At a fork in the path, the gnarled "snake tree" on the right is a fun photo motif. On the left, a short fork leads to the impressive Industrial Monument Hassendorfer Wehr on the Wümme river.
Back on the main path, we walk past charming weekend houses. At the next junction, you can take a shortcut towards Sottrum railroad station (3.6 km) - we continue to the Fährhof settlement. We follow the short detour to the Wümme lock and stop at the small wooden footbridge. Then we walk through the settlement, including the forest and meadows, to the district road K 205, which we cross carefully. Now we reach the Großer Fährhof. The small settlement with stud farm is idyllically situated in the forest between two ponds. Now we walk along sandy paths between the Wümmniederung and the wooded Fährhof nature reserve. The open landscape widens out.
Shortly afterwards, we reach the fascinating Vossberge nature reserve with its now resident shifting sand dunes. At the next fork in the path, we follow the 900-metre-long junction that leads us directly to the two-part dune range. Here there is sand, sand and more sand - an unusual sight in the middle of the inland. If you like, take the 1 km long turn-off to Everinghausen to the modern art work "Luftdurchlässig" by the artist Hans-Jürgen Freytag from Klein Meckelsen. We return to the fork in the trail and hike through the open Wümmeniederung, which is criss-crossed with ditches and offers fantastic sections of trail that characterize the southern route of the NORDPFAD.
SOUTH ROUTE from the Voßberge nature reserve via Hellwege and Unterstedt to Rotenburg (Wümme)
We soon reach the wooden bridge at the Wümmebogen. A bed slide located there allows fish to migrate unhindered. We pass a wooden signpost and continue through the lush meadows along the Wümme. NABU information boards explain the biodiversity along the way. Later, the meadow path meets a footpath and cycle path next to the district road K 205. We turn right, follow the path and walk to the village of Hellwege. The tranquil village offers good opportunities to stop for a bite to eat and stay overnight.
A little later, we leave the district road and turn left onto Viehweg, which leads us through a settlement with its impressive houses. A detour to the Wümme lock also branches off from here. Another 600 m long branch leads to a historic ensemble of buildings with a bakehouse, granary and mill. A nice place for a stopover.
The trail continues along the cattle path, crosses the Ahauser Mühlengraben and another stream. From now on, we hike through the middle of the unique floodplain landscape. Nature lovers will find a rich variety of flora and fauna directly on the banks of the Wümme. The Wümme is home to otters, for example. We pass the Kreienhoop meadow with its beautiful old trees, walk past the Hassendorfer Wehr industrial monument, from where you have a beautiful view of the river and the riverbed slide, before arriving at the Ahauser Bach . The stream makes its picturesque way through the nature reserve at the Ahauser Mühle mill.
Our path now stretches between the edge of the forest and the Wümme meadows to the Trienenwiese. There is a comfortable NORDPFADE sofa on the spacious meadow and you will meet a colorful group of pilgrims. The five wooden sculptures were created by Ahaus artist Ragna Reusch. It's a wonderful place to relax and perfect for funny "snapshots".
The last stage, which is also part of the NORDPFAD Rotenburger Wasserreich, takes us back to the district town via the Sternenweg. A nesting box nature trail set up by NABU accompanies the hiking trail. After around 1.5 km, we reach the wooden Gothard Bridge and cross the Wümme once again. A sandy beach by the river invites you to linger before we return on the NORDPFAD to the starting point at the playground in the Ahe and continue from there to Rotenburg railroad station.
Before your hike, you should inform yourself on www.nordpfade.de about possible detour and trail disturbances that may occur, for example due to flooding, storm damage or forestry work.

After the break, we walk through a weekend house area and through the gently undulating meadow landscape to the wooded and heather-covered Westermoor dunes, which were formed during the Ice Age.
Leave the wide field path and turn left onto a meadow path after passing through a railroad tunnel. Turn right into the village of Unterstedt, 1 km away, where there are several accommodation and catering establishments. The railroad line now runs briefly alongside our path. We then follow a natural path through the Wümme meadows to the former Unterstedter Wehr, where another small wooden footbridge invites us to linger. Fish can easily migrate upstream via the bottom slide located there.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Tour tip for a multi-day tour
At 32 km, this NORTH PATH is the longest of the NORTH PATHS and is therefore ideal for a multi-day tour. For example, hike the northern route on one day and the southern route on the other. There are numerous nice places to stay overnight in Rotenburg (Wümme), Waffensen, Sottrum, Hellwege and Unterstedt, and others in Hassendorf, Everinghausen and Ahausen.
Tour tips for day and half-day tours
Numerous bridges and weirs lead across the Wümme between the north and south routes of the NORDPFADES. These connecting paths, also signposted as "variants", are particularly suitable for day and half-day tours. Access routes to the NORDPFAD also lead from the surrounding villages and the railroad stations of Sottrum and Rotenburg (Wümme). In combination with the shortcuts, numerous tour variations are possible. Everyone can "knit together" their own individual tour.
