Moorland, forests and impressive expanses

The hike leads through the Tarmstedter Moor, an offshoot of the Teufelsmoor (Devil's Moor), through a gently undulating, wide cultivated landscape and light-flooded forests. The fascination of this northern German landscape is reflected in the works of various Worpswede artists.

Directions

Our hike starts at Tarmstedt town hall. We quickly leave the town behind us and reach the TarmstedterMoor on the idyllic field and meadow path. We reach the Tarmstedt moor path through a dense, primeval birch forest with water-filled hollows, ferns, cotton grass and pipe grass. A peat cutting, shelter and sheepfold bring the laborious work of the former moor farmers to life. The heart of the approximately one-hectare site is the picturesque moorland lake. Benches and tables on the shore invite you to linger and enjoy a picnic.

The route leads past ditches and meadows across the wide landscape and along the quarry pond at Ortholz, where sand was once mined and which is now leased to a fishing club. The area is a nature reserve and unfortunately it is not permitted to enter or swim there.

We soon enter the dense coniferous forest of Ortholz. At the edge of the forest, there are always charming distant views of the landscape until we reach the Dicke Holz after about 2 km and once again experience the cool, light-flooded tranquillity of the forest.

At the end of the mixed deciduous forest, the trail leads past the Dickes Holz shooting club , crosses the L 133 country road and winds its way through the Wendloh coniferous and mixed forest to the Rethbergsee lake on the grounds of the weekend park of the same name. With its mini-market, weekend catering, fallow deer enclosure, playground and paid bathing area, this is a great place to take a break before tackling the last 3 km to Tarmstedt . There, a detour leads to the town center with its shopping and refreshment facilities.

Short variant (approx. 2.5 hours)
The short 7.7 km loop leads from Tarmstedt town hall via the Tarmstedter Moor and the Moorpfad back to the starting point.

Disturbance reports
Before your hike, you should check www.nordpfade.de for information about possible detour and disruptions to the route, for example due to flooding, storm damage or forestry work.
