Directions
The NORDPFAD starts at the water mill in Sittensen at the idyllic mill pond, which is fed by the Oste. A little later, behind the mill pond, we come to the Sittensen home museum with its garden and fish ponds. We follow the course of the Oste along a narrow path, pass the Rastplatz Ostebogen and leave the river path. Through fields and meadows and partly along the former church path, we reach Burgsittensen and a little later the grounds of the Burgsittensen monastery estate. Here we follow in the footsteps of the noble family "Schulte von der Lüh". A short walk leads us along the Burgsittensen stream to the family's burial site and finally to the estate with hunting lodge and moat.
From Burgsittensen, we walk along the forest to the 1,000 ha Natur- und Vogelschutzgebiet Tister Bauernmoor. At the parking lot, we first pass the train station and the café of the small moor railroad. Then a 1.3 km long, beautifully laid out path leads through the middle of the moor. We can also take the small path that turns off to the left at some point and leads even further into the moor and offers some nice places to linger, away from the main route. At the end, we return to the main path, which we continue along until we reach the barrier-free viewing platform and later the 6.5 m high observation tower. From both vantage points, visitors have an impressive view of the vast, rewetted areas of moorland and the birdlife living there. In spring and autumn, large flocks of geese, cranes and other "travelers" can be observed. These find a sheltered resting and sleeping place in the Tister Bauernmoor during their migration.
Visitors can also explore the raised bog with theMoorbahn Burgsittensenwhich chugs leisurely to the two viewpoints. It runs every Sunday afternoon - except in winter. Rides for groups are also possible at other times than the regular timetable if booked in advance. Along the way, the train driver stops every now and then to tell you lots of interesting facts about the moor. On the way back, you can either take the little moor train again or simply walk back.
Once back at the parking lot, we leave the moor the same way and turn left into the Burgsittenser Wald at the crossroads behind the parking lot. We hike through the cool and varied forest area along forest and meadow paths. At the end of the forest, a wonderful view over the Feldmark awaits us. Through fields and along the Wedding Tree Trail, with its numerous apple trees, we finally walk towards Sittensen. Through a residential area, we reach the red-brick St. Dionysius Church. Now it's just a few steps back to Wassermühle Sittensen. If open, you can also visit the craftsmen's museum, which is located directly in the building. A short detour also leads to the town center with its refreshment, shopping and accommodation options.
Connecting with other NORDPFADEN
An approximately 4.5 km long access path leads from starting point 1 at the Sittensen watermill to the hiking destination Hohe Buchen des NORDPFADES Kuhbach-Oste.
Important note in wet conditions
If it has rained a lot the days before, the path from the Burgsittensen Moor Railway parking lot through the Burgsittensen forest could be very wet and partially under water. There is an alternative route that leads along the edge of the forest at the hunting lodge into Burgsittensen Forest.
General disruption reports
Before your hike, you should checkwww.nordpfade.de to find out about possible detour and trail disruptions that may occur, for example due to flooding, storm damage or forestry work.
