On the way with the “grey-horned” Heidschnucken on the Nemitzer Heide route – between heath sand and Rundling villages, cultural sights and a diverse richness of species await you!

The 550-hectare Nemitzer Heide developed after a forest fire in the Gartower Forst in August 1975 on the burnt areas around the small village of Nemitz. An exhibition in the Nemitzer Heidehaus informs about the cultural and natural history of the Nemitzer Heide. Today it is an important landscape for nature conservation and provides a habitat for many endangered plants and animals, such as the woodlark and nightjar. The Heidschnucken sheep, also called the “grey-horned,” are active every day to maintain the structurally rich and lively cultural landscape. You will surely see them because the hike leads directly past their sheepfold. On the last weekend in August the Nemitzer Heideblütenfest (heath blossom festival) is celebrated here. The village of Trebel is known for its annual fairs, which already played a big role in Wendland in 1548. At the “Kiekemarkt” in spring, the farmer’s bride was ‘spied out’ and in autumn at the “Griepemarkt” she was ‘caught.’ The fieldstone church in Trebel and the Rundling village of Marleben are also culturally interesting points on the hike through the heath.

Directions

The Nemitzer Heide route starts south of the Heidehaus on Nemitzer Street. From here the path leads directly to Trebel, running parallel to it is the Wendland cross-route, a part of the Wendland circular route. In the fieldstone church of Trebel, which you pass, there is an organ built in 1777 by Johann Georg Stein, whose sound still enchants today. At the Trebel farmer's taverns you turn left, continuing through the fields to the Rundling village of Marleben and then back to Trebel. Now the path leads along the adjacent pine forests into the Nemitzer Heide. For many animals that find food in the heath, the forest is a protective retreat area during the day. Directly through the heath the path goes to the sheepfold of the Heidschnucken sheep, who are in action every day to maintain the structurally rich and lively cultural landscape. In Nemitz, a barbecue area with a children's playground invites you to take a break. Over a magnificent tree avenue it goes back to the starting point of the path.
