Neuhaus in the 20th century

The 20th century in Neuhaus is initially characterised by a further economic upswing; the construction of the railway station triggered a second building boom. The end of the Second World War fundamentally changes life in Neuhaus: the Elbe becomes an insurmountable border and Neuhaus is separated from its old "hinterland". Hundreds of refugees are stranded in Neuhaus and many build a new life here. The "Catholic Church", which was built in 1950, is a reminder of this. The circular route also leads to the cemetery with its large memorial to the victims of the last days of the war in 1945.

The circular route focuses on the major events of the 20th century up to the reincorporation into Lower Saxony in 1993.
Over 650 years of eventful history.

The small town of Neuhaus an der Elbe looks back on a unique history:
It originated from the outer bailey of the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg.

Baroque life and ducal splendour ensured the first flourishing of the small town.
With the takeover of the ducal regency by Lüneburg-Braunschweig
the residence was abandoned, but Neuhaus continued to develop nonetheless.

The Amtshaus, a proud 18th century building, still dominates the town centre today.
The economic boom in the 19th century gave Neuhaus an urban
feel, before the profound changes of the 20th century also reached Neuhaus.

The three circular routes provide an insight into over 650 years of Neuhaus history,
which can be experienced at the various places and squares.

The information boards tell of historical events,
but also of the lives of the people of Neuhaus, their everyday lives and their festivals.
