Neuhaus in the 19th century

In the 19th century, Neuhaus takes on its current appearance and its "urban character": Neuhaus is booming. The nearby Hamburg market needed building materials (bricks and wood) and food (grain and milk) - all of which Neuhaus was able to supply. The town grows and the "citizens" show their prosperity in smart facades and

elegant commercial buildings.

The circular route takes you to particularly beautifully designed buildings. It tells of the many shops and craft businesses that once characterised life in Neuhaus. It reflects the further development of the town, including the construction of St Mary's Church.
Over 650 years of eventful history.

The small town of Neuhaus an der Elbe looks back on a unique history:
It originated from the outer bailey of the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg.

Baroque life and ducal splendour ensured the first flourishing of the small town.
With the takeover of the ducal regency by Lüneburg-Braunschweig
the residence was abandoned, but Neuhaus continued to develop nonetheless.

The Amtshaus, a proud 18th century building, still dominates the town centre today.
The economic boom in the 19th century gave Neuhaus an urban
feel, before the profound changes of the 20th century also reached Neuhaus.

The three circular routes provide an insight into over 650 years of Neuhaus history,
which can be experienced at the various places and squares.

The information boards tell of historical events,
but also of the lives of the people of Neuhaus, their everyday lives and their festivals.
