Schüttorf, Bentheim Mountains, Vecht Valley

Schüttorf has the highest church tower in the county of Bentheim - the Schüttorfer Riesen. The 81 m high tower was completed in 1535. Together with the tower of the Catholic Marienkirche church and the towering chimneys of the textile factories, the Protestant tower forms the visible silhouette of the former Vechtesiedlung settlement of Schuttorpe.
In the past, an important junction of two trade routes was located on the site of today's Schüttorf. This is how the town experienced its upswing: during the Middle Ages through trade and later through the textile industry. Even today, numerous splendid manufacturers' villas tell the story of those times. And did you know that Schüttorf had its own castle until the 1970s? Altena Castle slowly fell into oblivion over the centuries and fell into disrepair after the Thirty Years' War. It was eventually demolished. One attempt to explain the origin of the town's name is as old as Schüttorf itself. According to a legend, the Vechte was diverted in 1295 by the construction of a dam around the town, during which the citizens are said to have emptied their handcarts on the command "Schütt't d'r up".
