The baroque moated castle is a highlight of any cultural discovery tour through the Dornum region. Originally built in the 14th century by chieftain Hicko Kankena as the Norderburg, it was given its present form in the 17th century by Haro Joachim von Closter. The conversion transformed the castle into an imposing four-winged complex with an outer bailey. Special architectural elements such as ornate portals, gabled triangles, coats of arms of associated noble families as well as impressive sculptures and mottoes give the castle a unique atmosphere.
The restored Knights' Hall impresses with a surrounding gallery and an ornately painted ceiling featuring figurative and ornamental motifs. Portraits of the von Closter family hang on the walls.
The castle and the surrounding grounds host numerous cultural events throughout the year. These include the popular knights' games, the Dornum Art Days, the after-work market and various concerts that attract visitors from all over the region.
Note: The baroque moated castle is now used as a secondary school. The castle and castle grounds are therefore only open to visitors at certain times.
