The historic castle in Winsen an der Luhe, whose origins date back to around 1230, was first mentioned in a document in 1299. Originally, the moated castle repeatedly served as the temporary seat of the regional princes. After the outbreak of the Lüneburg War of Succession in 1371, the administration of the Obervogtei was moved to the castle.
In 1593, Duchess Dorothea, daughter of the Danish King Christian III, found her widow's seat here after the death of her husband Duke William the Younger. The palace was rebuilt under her direction and was given its current appearance. After the death of the Duchess in 1617, the castle initially became the administrative centre of the Hanoverian office of Winsen and later the Prussian district of Winsen.
Today, the moated castle in Winsen belongs to the state of Lower Saxony.
Couples can say "I do" in the picturesque castle chapel. Cultural events are also held there.
Guided tours of the castle can be booked on request at the Home Museum.
The castle is located in the heart of the town centre, nestled in the castle park at Schlossplatz 3, and is now home to the district court.
