Prinzenpalais | Landesmuseum Kunst & Kultur Oldenburg

Three buildings - one museum: whether a journey to the time of the dukes in the palace, baroque painting in the Augusteum or works of classical modernism in the Prinzenpalais: with its wealth of themes, the Landesmuseum Kunst & Kultur Oldenburg invites visitors to discover.Visitors to the classicist Prinzenpalais can marvel at the Neue Meister Gallery: fine art from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by the Worpswede Artists' Colony and the artists' group "Brücke" around Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Ludwig Kirchner.

Residence for the nobility

Originally, the Prinzenpalais, built from 1821 to 1826, served as a residence for the grandsons of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig. However, they only lived in the imposing building opposite the palace for about three years. After that, it was taken over by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter, who lived in it until his death in 1900.

New Masters Gallery

During the First World War, the Prinzenpalais was used as a military hospital, after which it was home to a school and later a government office. Since 2003, the former Prinzenpalais has been open to the public as a museum.
