With its three towers, the Old Town Hall is one of Einbeck's landmarks and is centrally located in the heart of the old town on the historic market square. The decorative carvings such as fan rosettes and tau bar profiles on the outer façade are impressive.
The town hall was first mentioned in a document in 1334. After the town fire in 1540, the new half-timbered building was erected on the remains of the massive previous structure, initially just a massive hall building.
The unusual bay windows with the pointed conical roofs (towers) were only added to the building in 1593/94.
In order to preserve the Old Town Hall for a long time, the building, which was in need of renovation, was restored between 1870 and 1914. Extensions and conversions to modernize the building also took place during this period. The current state of the lower town hall is due to a redesign in 1961/62.
Over the centuries, the building has been used as a market hall and as premises for the town council, the municipal savings bank, the treasury, the town administration and the municipal court. The upper floor once housed the royal legge and the municipal pawnshop. The town hallcellar served as a wine cellar, council tavern and potato cellar for surrounding residents.
Current use:
Today, the first floor houses the Einbeck registry office, the wedding room and a meeting room. The offices of the Deutscher Kinderschutzbund Northeim e.V. and Einbeck Tourismus are on the first floor.
The town hall on the first floor is used for various cultural events and public meetings. However, it can also be rented for other events.
