Gentle hills, vast forests, precious cultural heritage - the Hümmling Nature Park in Emsland, embedded in the North German lowlands, criss-crossed by small watercourses and dotted with evidence of megalithic culture from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The landscape is idyllic with its deep forests, the magnificent play of colors of blooming fields, its contrasting moor and peat areas, the delicate purple heath landscapes.

On the trail of megalithic tombs
The nature park's cultural significance is due to the numerous treasures from different eras: the prehistoric megalithic tombs are evidence of early settlement in the area. The megalithic culture cycle route takes you past individual erratic blocks and imposing burial sites. As stone witnesses, the monuments "tell" of a time more than 5,500 years ago. The fact that they can be found today in the shade of gnarled, ancient trees makes their experience even more mythical.
Elector Clemens August already appreciated the company of the trees, or rather the forest and its inhabitants. He chose the Hümmling as his hunting ground and gave the region an architectural baroque jewel with a far-reaching national reputation in the form of his hunting lodge Clemenswerth - today's Clemenswerth Castle in Sögel.
As one of the sights on the Emsland Route, Hüven Mill has fascinated visitors for centuries, as it is one of the last remaining wind and water mills in Europe. Cyclists can rest in its shade under huge trees on the banks of the Mittelradde. Well rested, they head for many other destinations, such as the Bible Garden in Werlte or Surwolds Forest with its climbing garden and fairytale show.
Hiking on the Hümmling trails

Hiking on the Hümmling trails
In the Hümmling Nature Park, 15 unique Hümmling trails await you, leading hiking enthusiasts through the picturesque Geest landscape. Each circular trail, between seven and 24 kilometers long, was designed according to the quality standards of the German Hiking Association and impresses with its own charm and history.
A particular highlight is the Theikenmeer circuit. This leads through one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany and is one of the most popular day hikes in the country.

The nature park is part of the National Natural Landscapes (NNL). In this alliance, Germany's national parks, nature parks, biosphere reserves and wilderness areas work together with people to preserve fascinating nature on around a third of Germany's surface area, convey the joy of experiencing nature and shape the future sustainably with confidence. It stands for diversity, tolerance and democracy.
