Coast

Over thousands of years, the tides have shaped one of the most fertile natural landscapes in the world: the Wadden Sea. It is the largest contiguous sand and mudflat system in the world. Nowhere else in the world has a more diverse landscape developed under the influence of the tides, which continues to change to this day.

The habitat is a nursery for North Sea fish, a breeding and resting area for millions of birds and home to seals. Due to its uniqueness, the Wadden Sea was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Throughout the Wadden Sea area, there are various opportunities to experience this fascinating habitat up close all year round.

In spring and fall, the coast is a paradise for birdwatchers. Between 10 and 12 million migratory birds rest in the Wadden Sea on their way to their summer and winter quarters.

Summer is the best time to actively experience nature. At low tide, you can get up close and personal with lugworms, shore crabs and the like on a guided mudflat walk . Larger sea creatures can be observed on a cutter trip, in aquariums or at the seal dog station

A unique natural spectacle is the Harbour Whale Days in April in Wilhelmshaven. You can explore nature on your own on the various nature trails. The national park houses on the coast and on the islands provide insights into nature and nature conservation.
