An extensive collection provides interesting insights into the development of the fire service

Today, you call 112 and the red fire engines arrive within minutes. But what was it actually like 300 years ago? And what did firefighters look like back then, were helmets and uniforms also subject to changes in fashion? The exhibition at the Salzbergen Fire Brigade Museum provides interesting and sometimes surprising answers. On 800 square meters, it displays ladder and fire-fighting vehicles, turntable ladders, pressure and portable pumps, breathing protection technology and small equipment from all eras, which together show the development of fire-fighting over the last 300 years.

In addition, there are more than 200 helmets from Germany and abroad in display cases: from the brass helmet, the ordinary leather helmet from the 19th century and the Prussian pickelhaube to the modern plastic helmet. A special highlight are the unique finds from a shoemaker's workshop, which clearly show how leather helmets were made by hand.
