Degodehaus
The last remaining representative half-timbered house from the time before the great city fire in 1676. As can be seen from the date on the crossbeam of the gable front, the typical late medieval residential house was built in 1502. The half-timbered building got its name in 1860 when the merchant Dietrich Wilhelm Degode opened a colonial and manufactured goods shop with a coffee roasting plant here. The people of Oldenburg particularly appreciated the high quality of the "Degode coffee". Today, the historic building opposite the town hall houses a shoe store and a restaurant.
Special ceiling painting
The Degodehaus is also worth seeing from the inside: in 1645, the then owner Hermann Mylius von Gnadenfeld commissioned a special ceiling painting of the then known continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Covered by a stucco ceiling for many years, it was only rediscovered by chance in 1992, uncovered and restored. The painting can be viewed during the store's opening hours.
