Buxtehude Museum für Regionalgeschichte und Kunst

Museum

The building was constructed in 1913 after the great city fire as a new home for the museum association's collections. The model for the building was an old farmhouse that had stood on this site. The museum focuses on regional history and art. Special exhibitions are also shown in the extension building.

The Buxtehude Museum has been presenting modern and attractive exhibitions since summer 2021 following a fundamental redesign. The eventful history of the Hanseatic city of Buxtehude is told in an exciting way using selected objects as well as film and audio stations. A special highlight is the archaeological exhibition on the finds from the Immenbeck burial ground. Unusual glass vessels, a multitude of colorful glass beads and other diverse grave goods from the Migration Period can be seen here. An extensive hands-on area invites visitors to experience the archaeological work both analog and digitally. In the "Sacred Art" section, Christian works of art are on display and the methods of their restoration are explained. In 1997, artist Michael Craig-Martin transformed the architecturally unusual exhibition space into a walk-in painting.
