At 6 km/h, the small light railway chugs leisurely through the Tister Bauernmoor, a typical raised bog landscape with ponds, grasses, heather and birch trees. The silence is only broken by the rattling of the 70-year-old locomotive.
During the 90-minute round trip, the train driver will tell you all kinds of interesting facts about the moor. After many hundreds of years of peat extraction, the Tister Bauernmoor and the neighbouring Ekelmoor were declared a bird and nature reserve in 2001.
Through rewetting, peat mosses and cotton grasses are gradually forming again in the wet areas. The industrial peat extraction area, on the other hand, has developed into a large area of shallow water, which is now an important breeding and habitat for 43 bird species and where thousands of migratory birds, such as cranes and geese, rest in spring and autumn.
From the 6.50 m high observation tower or the barrier-free viewing platform, the birdlife can be observed in peace and quiet with binoculars. The moor railway makes a stop there before continuing on. Those interested can also take the approximately 1.6 km walk back to the station.
School lessons on site / group trips
In consultation with schools and the Moorbahn Burgsittensen e.V. association, the area can be used for school lessons or project days. Guided tours can also be booked with knowledgeable staff from the Moor Railway Association.
The café in the Haus der Natur
Combine a trip on the Moor Railway with breakfast, homemade cake or a hearty tarte flambée. The barrier-free café, located directly at the Moor Railway station, is usually open from Wednesdays to Sundays from 9.30 a.m.

More information
Burgsittensen Moor Railway Association
The association is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the moor railway and its facilities. Every year, five train drivers take thousands of visitors on two trains through the moor. They explain in detail, but with humour, how the Tister Bauernmoor has developed as a result of human activity and why the moorland habitat is so worth protecting.
This can also be read in the guidebook "Das Tister Bauernmoor" by Hans Günther Beuck, which is available from the moor railway.
It is a matter close to the heart of the Moorbahn Association to enable all generations to enjoy a wonderful day on the moor.
Thanks to the moor railway and the barrier-free viewing platform, the Tister Bauernmoor can also be explored by those who are less able to walk or who are dependent on a wheelchair.
