The Burg Bodenteich is a former marshland or moated castle and is located on a mound of earth on the edge of a lake and moor that was drained in the 18th century (today's Seewiesen). This mound rises about 4-5 meters above the floodplain and is surrounded by a moat. Today, the castle grounds consist of 4 buildings.
Amtshaus
The Amtshaus, consisting of a half-timbered section, which is around 300 years old, and a massive transverse section from the 16th century, which was rebuilt in 1697 (the year is on the façade of the building). In the cellar beneath the half-timbered building is the remains of a round fieldstone tower from the 13th century. This entire building complex is a listed building.
Today, the ground floor of the half-timbered building is home to the Tourist Information Office of the municipality of Aue. On the ground floor of the massive transverse building is the Rittersaal, which is used for civil weddings, among other things.
Since 1989, the upper floor has housed the Castle Museum, which exhibits an extensive collection of photos, documentation and objects relating to the history of the castle, the village of Bodenteich and the Bodenteich office.
Please note that the listed main building and the museum can only be reached via steps. Visitors with disabilities can ask for assistance via an outside bell.
Brauhaus
In the brewery opposite, top-fermented, dark beer was brewed from 1634 - 1918. The Bodenteicher Burgbräu was called "Knorrbock". Production was discontinued due to the war.
The current building was rebuilt in 2005 according to plans from 1803. On the ground floor are the Braudiele and the Malzdiele; rooms which are now used for events. The "Museum of German Unity" has its exhibition rooms on the first floor. This can also be accessed by visitors with disabilities via an elevator.
Bakehouse
The reconstructed bakehouse next to the Brauhaus contains a stone oven, which is put back into operation on certain baking days. The bakehouse can be visited as part of a guided tour.
Castle tower
The castle stump with its glass dome is open during the day and offers visitors a view over today's Seewiesen. The tower houses a small exhibition on weapons and military technology in the Middle Ages.
The castle tower dates back to the 14th century and is the oldest visible building on the castle grounds. The almost square tower measures 11 meters on the outside and has walls around 3.50 meters thick. Its original height is estimated at around 30 meters. On the ground floor it served as a prison, while the upper floors are said to have been grain and storage rooms. After a town fire in 1808, however, its bricks were used to rebuild other buildings, so that today it has a height of 8.50 meters.
