Alte Liebe

Alte Liebe is indeed old: the two-storey wooden structure was built in 1733 - as a jetty and breakwater. Even today, ships depart from Alte Liebe for the islands of Neuwerk and Helgoland as well as the seal banks. Above all, however, people meet on the Alte Liebe to marvel at the large ships from all over the world that pass close by.

The Schiffsansagedienst Cuxhaven e. V. informs guests during the day from April to October - between 10 am and 7 pm - on the "Alte Liebe" about the size, origin and destination of the passing ships. The "live stream" can also be found on the Internet.

According to Gorch Fock, an old sailing ship called "Olivia" used to serve as a pontoon. The skippers called the place "Oliv". This Low German word later gave rise to the name "Alte Liebe". Insiders explain the name differently: in 1733, the hydraulic engineer Captain Spanninger sank three old ships, one of which was called "Die Liebe", off Cuxhaven. The ships were surrounded by piles and the space between them was filled with stones and bushes. This resulted in the "Alte Liebe" jetty. Whoever is right, the name Cuxhaven is and remains associated with the Alte Liebe.
