As long as the rose blooms, this city will never fade

.
The legend of the 1000-year-old rosebush on the cathedral apse dates back to the founding of the diocese of Hildesheim. In 815, Louis the Pious is said to have forgotten a precious reliquary among the blossoms of a wild dog rose that he had hung there to celebrate a mass. When he returned to retrieve the reliquary, it could no longer be removed from the rose bush. Louis the Pious saw in it a divine sign and had a chapel built on the spot in honour of the Mother of God. So much for the legend.

Whoever wants to admire the blossom of the native wild species "Rosa canina L" should visit the rose bush at the end of May/beginning of June. For a few weeks, it can then be seen.
