NORDPFADE (North Trails)

uniquely far-reaching and flat

Scenic circular routes with almost no ups and downs

Walking in the flatlands? They’re superb, but not strenuous! The NORDPFADE (Northern Trails) between Hamburg, Hanover and Bremen lead through forests, meadows, fields, heaths and moors – true north German landscapes. Cranes rest beside the lakes while ice forms pretty patterns on frozen streams and canals in the winter. Restaurants serve regional specialities like kale or smoked trout along the way.

With a choice of 24 circular routes, you are sure to find a favourite.

Well-signposted circular routes

Five quality-certified trails

Worried about getting lost? Impossible! The 24 NORDPFADE paths in the Rotenburg/Wümme district are well signposted, and each is a circular route between 5 and 32 kilometres long. An example is the enchanting Ostetal Nordpfad in one of northern Germany’s most beautiful unspoilt riverscapes, with dense riparian woodlands, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. The walk along the River Oste is so pretty that the Deutscher Wanderverband (German Hiking Association) has even designated it a ‘Walkable Germany’ Top Trail (Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland Traumtour). Four other NORDPFADE trails also bear this quality seal. The Kuhbach-Oste NORDPFAD leads you through idyllic river valleys. Or traverse forests and shallow river valleys on the Hölzerbruch-Malse NORDPFAD. Moors, megalithic tombs and the home village of the great north German writer Walter Kempowski lie along the Kempowskis Idylle NORDPFAD. And on the Dör’t Moor NORDPFAD, you’ll walk through a landscape of bog, woodland and heath. In fact, Wandermagazin named it Germany’s most beautiful path for a day walk in 2021. Which NORDPFAD will you take first?

When you’re on the path with a rumbling stomach, what could be better than coming upon a beautifully set table? That’s not just a dream on the NORDPFADE. Groups of walkers can order a table with regional specialities and cold drinks in a field, under trees, or by a river.

How about game dishes in the woods? Or would you prefer coffee and freshly baked cake?

And don’t forget to have each NORDPFADE walk entered on your walking pass. Enter the date of your walk on the pass and take a selfie at a prominent place on the route.

Anyone who does all 24 walks and sends in their walking pass and selfies will get a small surprise and be entered in the NORDPFADE hall of fame. A map showing all the paths with descriptions, sights, refreshment stops and more is available as a PDF for download, or you can order it from the NORDPFADE website.
