Wanderung durch die Walkenrieder Teichlandschaft

Harz National Park
A varied hike that invites you to get to know the area around the monastery and its unique pond landscape. The meeting point is at 10.15 am on the monastery forecourt at the entrance to the museum

The tour leads past the "Verschlossener Born", once the starting point of the monastery's drinking water supply, to "Alt-Walkenried". The remains of a manor house have recently been excavated there - presumably the residence of Adelheid, the founder of the monastery. Along numerous historic fish ponds with their connecting watercourses and stations such as the millrace, you will gain exciting insights into the medieval monastery water supply and pond management as well as the unique flora and fauna. The station at the remains of Sachsenstein Castle, which was built by Emperor Henry IV in the 11th century to secure his rule in the Harz Mountains, takes you even further back in history. The varied route combines nature, history and cultural landscape in an impressive way.

The hike takes around four and a half hours and is mostly without inclines, making it easy to walk. Weatherproof clothing and suitable footwear are nevertheless recommended. Catering is provided from a rucksack. As the route passes the train station, train and bus passengers can easily make their connections there if necessary.
