Theophanu, "the Greek woman" on the imperial throne in the 10th century, was exceptionally beautiful, highly educated and the richest woman in the empire.
She was adored and demonized, always remained the foreigner and asserted herself in an astonishing way when her husband died early and the heir to the throne, Otto III, was still a child. In order to preserve the throne for him, she ruled with expertise and pragmatism.
As part of the founder's family, she often visited the Gandersheim monastery, her eldest daughter became abbess of Gandersheim and her legendary marriage certificate was kept in Gandersheim for centuries.
This great woman was honored with an equestrian statue in Gandersheim in November 2025.
