Tag des offenen Denkmals in der Kastenmangel Steinhude

Guided historical tour
Open day
Other visit / guided tour
For Open Monument Day, the historic ironing frame from 1854 demonstrates how linen was smoothed out—a rare example of industrial heritage in Europe. New for 2026: Children will weave on looms.
We demonstrate how it works every half hour from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Coffee and cake are available! The box calender is an industrial machine used to smooth linen. It gives the finished linen a special sheen. It was installed in its own building in 1854. It is the largest operational machine of its kind in Europe. In addition to the calendering box—measuring 12 m x 2 m x 2.5 m and filled with 10 metric tons of boulders—the building houses a winding chair, a laying table, a sizing machine, and two presses. The building was restored from 1996 to 1999 by Gisela and Wilhelm Bredthauer with support from the City of Wunstorf, the Stadtsparkasse Wunstorf, the Lower Saxony State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the Sparkassenstiftung Lower Saxony, and the Klosterkammer Hannover, restoring it to its 1930 condition.

The Kastenmangel is located at the rear of the property at Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 10, 31515 Wunstorf-Steinhude.&

Tours are available as part of the guided city tour organized by Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH—Tel.: 05033 - 95010 - www.steinhuder-meer.de
