Special exhibition "Peasants' War and Monastery Storm"
500 years ago, the Peasants' War shook large parts of southern and central Germany with its call for freedom and justice. The uprising of the "common man" is considered the largest mass movement in Europe before the French Revolution.
The Cistercian monastery of Walkenried was not spared from the uprising either. Around Easter 1525, hundreds of angry peasants stormed the monastery, occupying and looting it. The destruction of the roof rider heralded the decline of the Gothic monastery church, which is now only a ruin.
The Cistercian Museum and the Walkenried Local History Association are presenting the cabinet exhibition "Peasants' War and Monastery Storm. Walkenried Monastery in the turmoil of 1525". The exhibition sheds light on the dramatic events of the monastery uprising as well as the causes and consequences of the Peasants' War and the turbulent period of upheaval in the 16th century.
The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Cistercian Museum. The visit is included in the museum admission fee.
