Pavel Efremov - "Emotion pur"
An evening filled with tango, featuring works by Astor Piazzolla and other composers. Award-winning accordionist Pavel Efremov will enchant us at the Fleckenskirche in Bad Iburg.
Astor Piazzolla (born March 11, 1921, in Mar del Plata; died July 4, 1992, in Buenos Aires) is best known today for his tangos, such as “Oblivion,” “Adios Nonino,” and “Libertango.” His love for this musical style was instilled in him at an early age by his father, who also gave him a bandoneon. As a result, Piazzolla played in various tango orchestras—including the well-known “Aníbal Troilo”—while studying composition.
Since tango had a bad reputation among Argentina’s upper class at the time, Astor Piazzolla was initially ashamed of his works. When he went to Paris on a scholarship in 1954 to study composition with Nadia Boulanger, he did not tell her that he had already composed and performed several tangos; instead, he presented her with his classical compositions, which were influenced by Ravel, Bartók, and Stravinsky. Ultimately, however, it was Boulanger who encouraged Piazzolla to continue composing tangos, as his own distinctive style came through particularly well in these works.
When Piazzolla returned to Argentina a year later, he began a reinterpretation of the tango—the “Tango Nuevo.” He altered the rhythm, harmony, and tempo; he also incorporated styles from Baroque music, such as counterpoint and the fugue form, as well as elements from jazz. Astor Piazzolla initially faced strong criticism for his new compositional style, as many traditional Argentines saw their national music as being under threat. Unfazed by this, he remained true to his style and, as a result, continues to feature on the programs of most concert halls to this day.

Pavel Efremov, born in 1994 in Chișinău, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, is an outstanding accordionist whose musical journey has taken him through excellent educational institutions and onto impressive stages across Europe. His artistic career began under the guidance of Segiu Mirzac at the “Stefan Neaga” Music College in Chișinău, before he successfully completed his bachelor’s degree under Marko Kassl at the renowned Detmold University of Music.
As part of the Erasmus program, Pavel further developed his musical skills at the Centro Superior del País Vasco “Musikene” under Inaki Alberdi. The year 2021 marked the beginning of his master’s studies at the renowned Folkwang University of the Arts, where he is currently pursuing a concert exam program under the guidance of Prof. Mie Miki.
Pavel Efremov received crucial artistic inspiration from renowned figures such as Janne Rättyä, Claudio Jacomucci, Veli Kujala, Grzegosz Stopa, Maciej Frąckiewicz, Georg Friedrich Schenck, and Richard Galliano. Pavel Efremov was awarded a scholarship from the Werner Richard-Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation in Herdecke and received the GWK Music Promotion Prize from the GWK Society for Westphalian Cultural Work in Münster. In December 2021, he received the award for Best Moldovan Student of the Year in the “Arts” category in Chișinău. In 2022, he received a scholarship from Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Rhein-Ruhr and was awarded the Folkwang DAAD Prize as the best international student of the year. In 2024, he was honored with the prestigious Folkwang Prize in the music category.
Pavel Efremov’s musical talent has taken him to stages around the world, from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to the De Bijloke Music Center in Ghent, the National Theater in Baghdad, and the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden. He has performed with renowned ensembles such as the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra, the Choreos Ensemble, and the Symphonic Orchestra of the Moldovan National Philharmonic.
Pavel is not only a virtuoso soloist and chamber musician but also a dedicated cultural diplomat. As president of the non-governmental organization “SonArte” in Chișinău, founded in 2019, he is actively committed to promoting young accordionists in the Republic of Moldova. That same year, he organized the first accordion festival in Moldova, and in 2024, he founded the “Summer Music Camp” summer academy, which has made a significant contribution to the local music scene.
